What is “neuropsychological assessment?”
That’s a mouthful, isn’t it? What it really boils down to is using different tests and tools to learn about how your brain learns and processes information.

Why would I or my child need neuropsychological assessment?
Neuropsychological assessment can be helpful in a wide range of situations:
  • Understanding your strengths and weaknesses (we all have them!) to better learn, carry out your work, and do your day-to-day tasks.
  • Identifying learning disabilities for school planning (accommodations, adjudication for exams, etc.)
  • Identifying ADD, ADHD, and difficulties with impulse-control, multitasking, planning, initiation, self-monitoring, and cognitive flexibility (“executive functions”)
  • Identifying intellectual and adaptive problems for Community Living BC criteria
  • Identifying brain difficulties associated with head injuries (e.g., accidents), epilepsy, cancer treatment (“late effects”), FASD, and other neurological conditions

Typically, our evaluation of you or your child will start with an initial interview to talk about what specific concerns you have and what the purpose of the assessment will be. Based on that information and the presenting problems we will decide on what tests would be useful to administer and explain why we feel they would be appropriate. The important factor is that you will take part in the decision-making process.
